How to Make Friends in San Diego: An Inside Look at Gals That Supper Club with leader Michelle Abadjian ๐Ÿ’…

Gals That Brunch Supper Club leader Michelle Abadjian with San Diego women at a GTB dinner, showing how to make friends in San Diego as an adult.

If youโ€™ve been wondering how to make friends in San Diego as an adult, this is the story of how one woman, one San Diego community, and one Supper Club dinner series has turned a big city into real sisterhood.

Meet Michelle Abadjian: San Diegoโ€™s career truth-teller, Supper Club ringleader, and the friend who shows up with wine, wisdom, and โ€œyouโ€™ve got thisโ€ energy.

How One Brunch in March 2023 Changed Everything (Thanks, Antoinette!)

It was March 2023. Women's History Month. We were hosting a brunch (as one does), and our friend Antoinette did what every good friend should do: she invited someone new to GTB. Enter Michelle Abadjian, walking into her first Gals That Brunch event, probably not knowing that she was about to become our go-to for literally everything.. career advice, rรฉsumรฉ rescues, restaurant recs, life wisdom, and those "tell me like it is but make it loving" pep talks we all desperately need.

Shoutout to Antoinette for inviting friends to GTB, because honestly? That's how the magic happens. That's how strangers become besties. That's how you find your people in a city that can sometimes feel impossible to crack.

March 2023, International Womenโ€™s Day Brunch, at Bivouac Ciderworks in North Park

Since that March 2023 brunch, our lives have genuinely never been the same. Michelle has become our resident career guru, our Supper Club leader extraordinaire, and the friend with perfect hair and a good head on her shoulders, who doesn't let the emoshhh of life take you out. She gives you wisdom and eloquent truth about how to survive (and absolutely crush) the job market. She'll tell you "cut this out of your rรฉsumรฉ, you're losing eyeballs" with all the love in the world. And then she'll help you craft something so sharp, so you , that opportunities start sliding into your DMs instead of you desperately applying to job posting number 847.

But here's the thing about Michelle: she's not just about the career stuff (though she's incredible at that). She's about creating community. Building connection. Turning strangers into friends over a perfectly paced meal. Making you feel seen, celebrated, and like you belong, whether that's around a dinner table or in your professional life.

And here at Gals That Brunch, weโ€™re not just helping you make friends. Weโ€™ve become the number one way to do it. Weโ€™re the largest and most trusted womenโ€™s communities in San Diego and one of the largest womenโ€™s communities in the world dedicated to friendship (and brunch ofc). Gals find their people one brunch, Supper Club dinner, and late-night โ€œhow is it already closing time?โ€ conversation at a time.

Weโ€™re also about helping you thrive in every area of life. We share the gifts and talents of women in our community and connect you with resources for health, wealth, career advice, and everything in between. Lifeโ€™s too short to struggle alone when thereโ€™s a whole community ready to lift you up.

And Michelle? She's the perfect example of why this community matters. She walked into a brunch as Antoinette's plus-one and walked out as family. Long live girlhood. Long live bringing your friends to GTB. Long live Michelle Abadjian.

If we had to describe Michelle's hosting style in three words, she'd tell you:

Curated, Connected, Chic (And all the while Probably Holding a Dirty Martini)

And honestly? That's the whole vibe. That's the energy we're all trying to channel.Every detail matters, from the lighting that makes everyone look like a literal QUEEEEEN (because harsh overhead lighting is a crime against humanity and good conversation) to the name tags that break the ice before anyone even sits down. Michelle's hosting love language is effortless mingling and perfectly guided table flow, plus name tags and extra forks. Because you never know when someone's going to need an extra fork, and being prepared is a love language, okay?

But beyond the Pinterest-perfect aesthetics, beyond the Instagram-worthy table settings and the perfectly curated playlists, there's something deeper happening. Michelle has this gift for reading the room, for sensing when to let conversation flow wild and free and when to gently guide it back. She creates these pockets of magic, these moments when the energy shifts, when strangers become friends, and when everyone at the table feels like they're exactly where they're supposed to be.

"My favorite part about hosting Supper Club is the moment the room shifts," Michelle shares.

"When everyone settles in, the conversations start flowing, and it feels like we've created a little pocket of magic. I love bringing people together, setting the tone, and watching strangers become friends over a shared meal. It's the connection, the energy, and the community we build around the table that lights me up most."

Like, can we just pause and appreciate that? In a world that feels increasingly disconnected, where everyone's glued to their phones and "community" happens in comment sections, Michelle is out here creating actual, real-life pockets of magic. Long live women who bring people together. Long live intentional gatherings. Long live Michelle.

Gals That Brunch San Diego Supper Club celebrates 1 year of long-table dinners at Steak 48 in Del Mar (September 2025), with women laughing, connecting, and showing how to make friends in San Diego.

What's Lighting Her Up Right Now (Spoiler: All The Good Stuff)

This season, Michelle is leaning into reinvention, deeper connection, and joy in the little things.

And honestly? Same, girl. Same.

"This season is lighting me up with a sense of reinvention, deeper connection, and joy in the little things," Michelle says.

"I'm energized by creating new possibilities for my career and brand, hosting meaningful gatherings, building my future with Rex (fiance), and soaking up all the sweet, funny moments with Bella. I'm leaning into signs, alignment, and inner guidance. Feeling the spark of my next chapter taking shape."

Between building Elevate Talent Studio (her career consulting business ), leading Gals That Supper Club dinners across San Diego, planning her wedding to Rex (!!!), and being the best dog mom to Bella (who probably deserves her own Instagram account, just saying), oh wait she has one, LOL @BellaBeanShibaโ€ฆ Michelle is in full bloom. She's embracing change, celebrating love, and creating community wherever she goes.

And if you're wondering what her perfect dinner party guest brings? An artisan dessert to elevate the meal, and they leave with a satisfied, happy belly. That's the Michelle A. standard, and we're obsessed.

Her signature sip when she's scouting a new spot? A Dirty Martini with blue cheese olives. Vodka, please. (Told you she was chic.)

Career Advice That Actually Works (No Generic LinkedIn Tips Here)

When Michelle isnโ€™t mapping out the next Gals That Brunch Supper Club, Helping you make friends in San Diego or talking us off our โ€œIโ€™m quitting my job and moving to Italiaaaaโ€ ledges, sheโ€™s in full-on power suit mode. Sheโ€™s a seasoned talent acquisition leader with 10+ years as a recruiter, which means she knows exactly what hiring managers are looking for (and what sends your rรฉsumรฉ straight to the nope pile).

So we asked her to spill. At the tail end of 2025 and heading into 2026, whether youโ€™re in a full Chandler Bing pivot, a soft reinvention, or just locking in your spot in the market, Michelleโ€™s sharing the career advice you actually need.

Hereโ€™s the thing about Michelle: she doesn't sugarcoat, but she also doesn't crush your dreams. She's the perfect balance of "here's what's not working" and "here's exactly how to fix it." She's got a good head on her shoulders, doesn't let the emotions take you out, and gives you wisdom and eloquent truth about how to survive and absolutely thrive in the job market.

Through Elevate Talent Studio, Michelle delivers expert audits, strategic consulting, and premium career branding packages that elevate your rรฉsumรฉ, LinkedIn presence, and messaging so you can attract better opportunities, position yourself with confidence, and accelerate your next career move.

Her rรฉsumรฉ glow-up philosophy?

"Taking who you are, what you've done, and where you're going and turning it into a story so sharp, aligned, and elevated that it finally sounds like the person you've been all along."

Chef's kiss. That's it. That's the tweet.

Top 3 Quick Wins Job Seekers Can Do This Week

Michelle doesn't gatekeep. Here's her advice for standing out right now:

1. Increase visibility on LinkedIn. Comment thoughtfully on 3-5 posts. Add context, show expertise, and move the conversation forward. This isn't about self-promotionโ€”it's about demonstrating your value through genuine engagement.

2. Join an industry virtual event or webinar. Real-time access to potential hiring managers and leaders = real connection. Plus, it's way less awkward than trying to work a room at an in-person event where you don't know anyone.

3. Practice your 20-second elevator pitch. Who you are + what you do + the type of role you want. Michelle recommends practicing this until it feels natural, not rehearsed. You should be able to say it at a coffee shop, at Supper Club, at a wedding (hey, you never know).

The Rรฉsumรฉ Mistake Michelle Fixes All The Time

"Putting responsibilities first instead of results," Michelle says. "Your rรฉsumรฉ isn't a job descriptionโ€”it's a highlight reel. Lead with impact."

Fast fix? Flip the script. Instead of "Managed a team of five," try "Led a team of five to increase quarterly revenue by 30%." See the difference? The first tells what you did. The second shows what you achieved .

Her Go-To LinkedIn Headline Formula

Use this formula: Your Title + Your Specialty + The Value You Bring.

Your LinkedIn headline should answer: Who are you? What do you do? Who do you help?

Example: Talent Strategist | Career Branding & Rรฉsumรฉ Expert | Helping Professionals Land Roles That Align

Stop using "Seeking New Opportunities" as your headline. (Michelle is cringing.) Start using this formula instead.

Career Advice for Pivoters

"Focus on the value you created," Michelle advises. "The strengths, outcomes, and transferable skills that matter across industries. Reframe your experience in the language of where you're headed, highlight the results you've delivered, and clearly connect the dots so a hiring manager can quickly see how you fit. This is how you build a bridge into your next chapter."

Rรฉsumรฉs are just storytelling for your next chapter. "Begin with clarity: What's the chapter you're stepping into? Then elevate the pieces of your experience that support that direction, your wins, your strengths, your growth. A rรฉsumรฉ isn't a history bookโ€ฆ it's an invitation to your future."

What Is Gals That Supper Club, Anyway?

(and How It Helps You Make Friends in San Diego)โ€ฆ

Letโ€™s break it down: Gals That Supper Club is our monthly intimate dinner series under the Gals That Brunch umbrella because around here, weโ€™re bigger than brunch, always. On paper, itโ€™s a San Diego supper club and womenโ€™s social club where you can make friends in San Diego as an adult while eating your way through some of the best spots in the city.

But in real life? Itโ€™s where women exhale, step a little more into who theyโ€™re meant to be, and remember what it feels like to be seen, supported, and surrounded by actual community.

We welcome everyone who vibes with our mission of connection, community, and really good food. It's about creating spaces where babes can show up as themselves, meet incredible women, and leave feeling fuller (literally and metaphorically).

Over the past year, Michelle has hosted 22 dinners across San Diego from Mission Hills to Del Mar, Little Italy to Encinitas, Ocean Beach to La Jolla, North Park to Pacific Beach, and everywhere in between.

What She's Learned About Belonging

"Supper Club is never just about the food," Michelle says. "It's about the energy, the intention, and the way people soften when they feel genuinely welcomed. Conversation flows easier in warm lighting, people relax when they feel seen, and connection happens in the quiet in-between momentsโ€”from passing a dish, sharing a story, laughing at something small."

Belonging, Michelle has learned, tastes like the signature cocktail everyone Instagrams twice and sounds like brunch-style buzz elevated to dinner party sophistication at a long table.

Her Recipe for a Dream Supper Club Night

"A dream supper club is all about effortless flow, where the energy feels aligned, the space feels inviting, and the lighting softens everyone into ease. The night unfolds naturally, courses glide out, conversation deepens, and nothing ever feels rushed."

What First-Timers Should Know

Nervous about your first Supper Club? Michelle's got you:

"Supper Club is meant to feel easy and welcoming. Come as you are, bring your curiosity, appetite, and be ready to meet good people. The key to softening any nerves is to show up a little early, it gives you space to settle in, take a breath, and ease into the room before it fills. There's no pressure to perform or impress, just an invitation to connect, enjoy, and feel at home."

How to Make Friends in San Diego Through community

If youโ€™re new around here, new to San Diego, new to Gals That Brunch, or just newly honest about the fact that โ€œhi, I actually need friendsโ€ ๐Ÿ™‹โ€โ™€๏ธ, youโ€™re in good company, mah sistahhh friend. Making friends in San Diego as an adult doesnโ€™t happen by accident. It happens when you give yourself repeated chances to sit at the table until it starts to feel like your table. Hereโ€™s the Gals That Supper Club, tested playbook for how to make friends in San Diego that actually stick:

  • Say yes to one thing. Pick one eventโ€”brunch, Supper Club, book club, craft club, WFH clubโ€”and GO. You donโ€™t need 20 social plans; you need one consistent space where you keep showing up so people can actually get to know you. Community isnโ€™t chemistry, itโ€™s repetition.

  • Choose a Gals That Brunch event you can return to. Apps come and go, but for over 10 years Gals That Brunch has been the go-to way to make friends around the worldโ€”and 9 years as the leading womenโ€™s community in San Diego. When you keep coming back, you start to see the same faces, inside jokes form, and strangers slowly turn into โ€œthese are my people.โ€ Itโ€™s one of the easiest ways to make friends in San Diego as an adult: show up, sit down, let the room do some of the work.

  • Follow up after the event ends. Swap Instagrams, send a โ€œloved meeting you ๐Ÿฅน๐Ÿ’›โ€ message, or lock in โ€œsee you at the next GTB event.โ€ If youโ€™ve been wondering how to make friends in San Diego, this is the real playbook: show up, circle back, repeat. Belonging is built in the follow-through.

Michelle's San Diego Restaurant Reviews: The Holy Trinity of the Best Restaurants in San Diego

If San Diego had a group chat titled โ€œWhere Are We Eating Tonight?,โ€ Michelle would be the friend dropping all the best recs for the best restaurants in San Diego for groups and Supper Club nights. She knows the San Diego restaurant scene like the back of her hand, where the lighting is flattering, the cocktails are strong, the pasta is dreamy, and the tables are actually designed for real conversation (hello, group dinners).

These are her top three picks for group-friendly restaurants in San Diego (right now): Fort Oak in Mission Hills, Cesarina in Point Loma, and Wildland in Carlsbad, the holy trinity of spots weโ€™d keep going back if we could to for Supper Club, birthday dinners, and โ€œjust becauseโ€ nights that turn into core memories.

Fort Oak โ€“ Mission Hills

Fort Oak feels like the kind of place where a simple Tuesday night can quietly turn into a celebrationโ€”firelight flickering from the open hearth, glasses catching the last of the Mission Hills sun, and plates that taste like someone obsessed over every char mark and every drizzle of sauce. Set in a converted mid-century car dealership, it's all clean lines and warm wood, a modern room wrapped around a glowing, wood-fired heart.

Helmed by chef Brad Wise, the menu leans into bold, smoky flavors and pristine seafood. Fort Oak is part of Trust Restaurant Group, the same family behind Trust, Rare Society, Cardellino, and The Wise Ox.

Heritage pork chop with shishito peppers and potatoes at Fort Oak, a Gals That Brunch Supper Club favorite for making friends in San Diego.

Michelle says:

"Some restaurants feel made for dates, some for celebrationsโ€”but Fort Oak in Mission Hills feels made for gathering. The moment you step inside, you feel itโ€”the warm, sophisticated vibe that strikes the perfect balance between modern and inviting.

One of the elements that makes Fort Oak a supper club favorite is the seating layoutโ€”specifically: the round tables designed for groups. There's something magical about dining in a circle. No one's left out, conversations flow naturally, and the energy feels communal and cozy.

Then there's the foodโ€”rich, flavorful, layered, and beautifully executed. But the star of the evening, without question: the heritage pork chop with shishito peppers and potatoes crowned with garlic chips . It's a dish that stops the table. Perfectly cooked, deeply savory, balanced with a subtle heat, and finished with those addictive, crispy garlic chips that guests talk about long after the plates are cleared.

Fort Oak doesn't just serve a mealโ€”it creates a mood. It feels intimate without being formal, elevated without being fussy, and social without being loud."

Cesarina โ€“ Point Loma

Cesarina feels like being invited into a friend's sunlit Roman kitchen, where the pasta is rolled all day, the sauce simmers low and slow, and the shelves are lined with jars of preserved treasures. Founded by chef Cesarina Mezzoni, her husband Niccolรฒ Angius, and their friend Giuseppe Capasso, this cozy Voltaire Street trattoria is the heartbeat of their growing restaurant family.

Mezzoni leads a culinary program built on fresh, housemade pasta, regional Italian dishes, generous vegan options, and a whimsical tableside dessert ritual that makes every dinner feel like a special occasion.

Cesarinaโ€™s Gnocchi Porcini Gamberi e Tartufo, a dreamy pasta dish our Gals That Brunch Supper Club shares while making friends in San Diego.

Michelle's must-order:

Gnocchi Porcini, Gamberi e Tartufo โ€”rich, decadent, and only gracing the menu in summer. An absolute chef's kiss.

Wildland โ€“ Carlsbad

Wildland is what happens when someone takes the soul of a beach townโ€”the salt air, the eucalyptus, the soft, golden eveningsโ€”and translates it into an all-day restaurant, bakery, and bar. Dreamed up by restaurateur John Resnick and chef Eric Bost as a follow-up to their Michelin-starred Jeune et Jolie, this 190-seat Carlsbad Village space is wide open and sun-soaked, blurring indoors and out.

The menu leans into wood-fired everything and comfort food threaded with the flavors of coastal Italy, France, and the Mediterranean, all grounded in Southern California's landscape.

Grilled maitake mushrooms with parmesan fonduta at Wildland in Carlsbad, one of our favorite dishes to share while we make friends in San Diego.

Michelle says:

"If you're looking for a dining experience that feels intentional, elevated, and beautifully unhurried, Wildland in Carlsbad is a supper club dream. The open-concept kitchen sets the toneโ€”chefs in motion, aromatics drifting through the room, and a calming energy that makes you want to settle in and stay awhile.

For larger groups, the long table positioned right beside the kitchen is divineโ€”close enough to feel part of the craft, yet relaxed enough to spark effortless conversation.

And the dish that lives in our minds forever? The grilled maitake mushrooms with parmesan fonduta, mint, and bresaola. It's rich yet bright, earthy yet silkyโ€”truly life-changing.

Wildland isn't just a restaurant. It's a vibe, a gathering space, and a reminder that food tastes better when the room feels right."

San Diego Superlatives

This is our San Diego Superlatives round-up: a quick highlight reel of the best San Diego restaurants for golden-hour oceanfront patios, cozy group dinners that go till closing time, and over-the-top hospitality moments from our Gals That Brunch Supper Club adventures.

Best patio energy at golden hour: Poseidon in Del Mar; Warm light, ocean breeze, and waves practically high-fiving your table. Poseidon in Del Mar is our beachside go-to when we want sunset views, seaside cocktails, and pure coastal bliss at one of the best oceanfront restaurants in San Diego.

Best “we talked till closing” vibe: Fort Oak in Mission Hills; dim glow, long tables, and wood-fired everything. It’s one of our favorite San Diego restaurants for slow dinners, deep conversations, and that “wait… they’re stacking chairs, we should probably go” moment.

Warmest hospitality moment: Brisa’s champagne-style greeting in Little Italy; the kind of San Diego restaurant where you’re handed a sparkling drink the moment you sit down, the music is vibey, and suddenly you’re like, “Oh, this is what being spoiled feels like.” For our Supper Club dinner, Brisa poured a special welcome bubbly just for our group; a small, intentional gesture that made every gal feel seen and set the tone for the whole night. It was such a standout act of hospitality that it now lives on in our Supper Club highlight reel.

The Final Word

Michelle walked into a Gals That Brunch table in March 2023 as Antoinetteโ€™s plus one, but the real story is what happened after that first yes. She came back. Then she kept coming back. Midweek coffee dates. WFH Lattes & Laptops. Weekend brunches, movie nights, happy hours. Ordinary Tuesdays and big milestone moments. Somewhere in the middle of all that showing up she quietly grafted into our hearts and our lives and became an integral part of this community. She is not only an incredible friend to me, but to this whole San Diego crew, living proof that when you keep showing up, your whole โ€œmake friends in San Diegoโ€ story can slowly, steadily, beautifully change. Community is rarely fireworks all at once. Most of the time it is small yeses, over and over, until one day you look around and realize you have people.

This last year we had a front row seat to the beauty of who she is as she stepped up to lead our San Diego Gals That Supper crew.
